SUMMARY:Bagels Not Bourbon: Jessica Elkan
DESCRIPTION:JUNE 20TH  \n9:00AM – 11:00AM\nJESSICA ELKAN – JAMES BEARD PUBLIC MARKET\n$35\nTickets include entry and a spread of bagels\, fruit\, coffee\, tea and juice \nWe trace James Beard’s roots from Portland’s market stalls to a bold new vision for our city’s culinary future. \nBAGELS NOT BOURBON is where Portland comes to think out loud. \nHosted by The Idea Factory at Multnomah Whiskey Library\, this Friday morning series brings together creative thinkers\, civic leaders\, and cultural changemakers for honest conversations over coffee and bagels. No slides\, no scripts—just bold ideas and the people building what’s next for Portland. \n\nJoin us for a compelling conversation with Jessica Elkan\, Executive Director of the James Beard Public Market\, as we delve into the rich tapestry of Portland’s culinary history and its ongoing evolution. We’ll explore how James Beard’s early experiences in Portland’s bustling markets with his mother ignited a passion that would influence American cuisine profoundly. Jessica will share the nearly two-decade journey to bring the James Beard Public Market to life\, transforming from a visionary idea into a tangible space celebrating Oregon’s diverse food culture. \nExpect insights into the challenges and triumphs of establishing a public market in the heart of Portland\, the significance of honoring Beard’s legacy\, and the market’s role in supporting local producers and fostering community connections. We’ll also uncover some lesser-known facets of this journey\, offering a fresh perspective on what it means to build a culinary institution that reflects both heritage and innovation. \nJessica Elkan is the Executive Director of the James Beard Public Market\, leading the effort to build a seven-days-a-week public market that celebrates Oregon’s agricultural bounty and culinary excellence. Raised in Oregon’s Willamette Valley and growing up in her family’s woodworking business\, she developed a deep appreciation for local artisans\, makers\, and public markets. \nWith more than two decades of experience in nonprofit leadership\, Elkan has launched social purpose enterprises and developed events at the intersection of food and philanthropy to create social impact. She has led initiatives to support underserved communities and has a reputation for strategic vision and civic engagement. Outside of work\, Jessica enjoys exploring public markets around the world and is actively involved in her community promoting all things Oregon.

SUMMARY:Bagels Not Bourbon: Dr. Tenisha L. Tevis and Bridget Jones
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED\n9:00AM – 11:00AM\nDR. TENISHA L. TEVIS\nBRIDGET JONES \n$35\nFrom Classrooms to City Blocks\, Dr. Tenisha L. Tevis and Bridget Jones explore how inclusive education can shape not just students\, but the future fabric of Portland. \nJoin Kimiko Matsuda for a candid conversation with Dr. Tenisha L. Tevis\, Associate Professor of Adult and Higher Education at Oregon State University and Director of the Difference\, Power and Oppression Program\, and Bridget Jones\, Dean of Enrollment Management and acting Director of Admissions and Recruitment at Portland Community College.  Together\, they’ll explore how education shapes not just students\, but entire communities.  At a time when Portland is actively reimagining its future\, Tenisha and Bridget will highlight how inclusive curriculum\, equitable access\, and cultural storytelling can strengthen pathways to belonging\, justice\, and civic renewal.  Their perspectives – rooted in both community college and university settings – invite us to see education not only as preparation for the workforce\, but as a civic necessity for a thriving city. \nExpect reflections on the power of education to weave itself into Portland’s cultural fabric\, the opportunities and tensions in building more inclusive systems\, and why the classrooms of today hold lessons for the city we’re trying to create tomorrow.  Both Tenisha and Bridget’s work focuses on equity in education and the power of inclusive curriculum to reflect the full breadth of our histories.  Together\, we’ll discuss how educational systems – and the narratives they elevate – can be tools for building a more connected\, creative\, and culturally vibrant Portland. \nWe hope you will join us. \nTickets include admission to the event as well as a spread of fresh fruit\, bagels & accompaniments\, coffee\, tea and juice. \n
