We’re excited to welcome back BAGELS NOT BOURBON – where Portland comes to think out loud. Hosted by The Idea Factory in the Library, this Friday morning series brings together creative thinkers, civic leaders, and cultural changemakers for honest conversations over coffee and bagels. No slides, no scripts—just bold ideas and the people building what’s next for Portland. Next up in the 2026 line up:

Storytelling as Civic Power
Why Women’s Sports Stories Matter – and Why Portland Is the Place for Them

Join Kimiko Matsuda in conversation with Jenny Nguyen and Molly King as we explore how storytelling—through film, sport, and culture—can shape civic identity and redefine representation in athletics.

Together, Jenny, Molly, and Kimiko are launching the International Women’s Sports Film Festival (IWSFF) in Portland in May 2026 – an inaugural global festival dedicated to celebrating women’s and nonbinary athletes through films, documentaries, and shorts from around the world. The festival shines a light on the women shaping the future of sport, elevating their achievements, innovations, and cultural impact through the power of cinema.

Drawing from Jenny’s work building community-centered spaces that champion women’s sports, and Molly’s leadership in independent film and documentary storytelling, this conversation will examine why women’s sports stories matter now—and why Portland continues to emerge as the Global Epicenter of Women’s Sports.

We’ll discuss how storytelling can serve as a civic force: inspiring young athletes, strengthening community pride, advancing gender equity, and connecting local audiences to global movements. This is an early, candid look at a project in formation—and a broader reflection on how culture, sport, and the arts can work together to move cities forward.

Expect reflections on creative leadership, the responsibility of representation, and how film can help reshape who we see—and celebrate—on the world’s sporting stages.

We hope you will join us.

Tickets include admission to the event as well as a spread of fresh fruit, bagels & accompaniments, coffee, tea and juice.
