Bagels Not Bourbon: Stuart Wells

JULY 25TH
9:00AM – 11:00AM
STUART WELLS – BIRD ALLIANCE OF OREGON
We explore how rewilding an East Portland landfill is reshaping what conservation looks like in the urban core.
BAGELS NOT BOURBON is where Portland comes to think out loud.
Hosted by The Idea Factory at Multnomah Whiskey Library, this Friday morning series brings together creative thinkers, civic leaders, and cultural changemakers for honest conversations over coffee and bagels. No slides, no scripts—just bold ideas and the people building what’s next for Portland.
Join us for a conversation with Stuart Wells, Executive Director of the Bird Alliance of Oregon, as we explore the organization’s transformative journey from its origins as the Portland Audubon Society to its current role in urban conservation. We’ll delve into the ambitious plans to convert a 12.5-acre former landfill on NE 82nd Avenue into a state-of-the-art wildlife hospital and nature sanctuary, a project that exemplifies the Alliance’s commitment to ecological restoration and community engagement.
Stuart will share insights into the challenges and opportunities of urban conservation, the significance of the organization’s recent name change, and the innovative strategies being employed to create a sustainable and inclusive green space in East Portland. Expect a thought-provoking discussion on how reimagining neglected urban areas can lead to meaningful environmental and social impact.
Stuart has spent decades in leadership roles in the conservation field, devoting his career to protecting and reestablishing endangered species populations in the wild—from the Cactus Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl to the Black Footed Ferret. Stuart’s career spans the Smithsonian, U.S Fish and Wildlife Service, the Phoenix Zoo, and now Bird Alliance of Oregon. His deep love of conservation, background as a scientist, commitment to equity, and successful leadership experience at large and complex organizations will be instrumental to advancing the mission of Bird Alliance of Oregon.
